Finally found the problem! This should hopefully help somebody else, and if not make others smile, so I'll post of my stupidity.

Essentially I had an upper case V for videos in the path name under the settings for the share in argus. On the network drive it was lower case v. Obviously on a windows machine the case is ignored so didn't show as a problem for the windows clients, but didn't work with ios devices which are based on linux machines which doe care about case.

Sorry to have wasted everyone's time, hopefully it'll help if someone else has a similar problem.
