Turns out it wasn't a password problem. It was down to my server computer name. I had it all in lowercase for my video shares (which works perfectly normally). Changed it to capitals and all of a sudden it works.
The littlest things eh!

Nice that you got it working!
Although it remains strange that some parts of XBMC don't seem to care about upper/lowercase and other parts are picky.
