Need your advice: which DVB-C tuner cards?

Post by Christoph21x » Fri May 16, 2014 7:09 pm

Dear All

I'm running here two servers with over all 6 DVB-C tuner cards (Digital Everywhere), all with CAM modules.

I would appreciate your advice in buying new ones as those cards are quite, let's say, "sensible" when be run with decrytion SmartCards.

I'm searching cards to fulfill the following specifications:
- 2 cards DVB-C (2 PCIe-Slots available)
- 4 Channels all together
- all 4 channels must be able to record in HD simultaneously (be sure, the server can do it :) )
- dito. encrypted (CAM)
- 4 CAM-Modules placeable
- best would be: compatible with Argus TV-Recorder
- possible, but not preferred: compatible with MediaPortal TV-Server (I would like to move back from MP TV-Server to Argus)

Anyone to give me a hint? Pls tell me about your EXPERIENCE, not too much interested on advertisements, I could read them on my own...
Especially also interested in the "But's" and "When's"..

Thanks in advance & kind regards from Switzerland - Chris

Hey Chris,

4 CAM's? realy???
Maybe you should think about local-only cardsharing. As said: maybe!

I'm using Hardware from digital-devices, a german manufactor.
If you by, as example, a "DD Cine CT2 V7", you get a double-tuner and 3 Extension Slots where you can connect a CI or a DD double-tuner device each.

Pro's:
- modular System, you can build on your current request - step by step
- up to 8 Tuners, using just 1 PCI-E Slot
- you can mix Airing-type (DVB-C/-T/-S) as you like
- TWIN-CI available
- every tuner can have access to every connected DD-CI
- works with ARGUS

Con's:
- not cheap
- need's a good signal-Quality

At the Moment i can't say anything using Hardware CI/CAM.

Maybe DigitalDevices is a Option for you!

ciao & good luck
luetty

PS: recording 4 HD-Channels / or more is a daily business on my Setup.
The bottleneck is -most time- the harddisk, you need a quick one for simultan recordings - but you know it from current Setup ;-)

Why the many cam slots?

I'm looking into a hdhomerun, perhaps this could help you. But local cardsharing is the way to go I guess

Hey luetty - thanks for thios profound explanation. This sounds already better than in my dreams :)
4 CAM - that's what I currently use. But with FireDTV (Digital Evewrywhere was bought by digital devices by the way) I get slightly in trouble when running all 4 in HD and encrypted simultaneously. Let's say: it isn't failsafe and if an error occurs, every now and then, all 4 go into failure - and that's then a "complete loss".
I guess the bottleneck here are the two firewire cards that I need to run all 4 in HD.
That lead me to the thoughts, that I would like to create a less complex setup - and from what you describe, that sounds to be a perfect match.
Thanks, friend & kind regards - Chris

Hey rudig, thanks for your answer.
Also luetty wrote about card sharing. I'm not familiar with it, to be honest... you two may be right, I have to read a bit through.
Thanks for the hint concerning hdhomerun. I'll have a look at those.

Kind regards - Chris

Cardsharing works here now for about there years. Whole family uses my old Windows Vista setup, i've got two dvb-c tuners. This setup was able to record 8 channels from two streams at once (sd quality). During normal use with epg recording there recordings happend quitte often, four at the same time occurs almost never.

Cardsharing with mdapi plus newcs and a USB card reader works fine, it's a one machine setup by the way

Thanks, rudig!
My provider´s CI-Cards only allow decryption of 1 channel at a time.
When I come to this, may I contact you through PM, iff I have questions?

Kind regards - Chris
