Using MPC-HC for viewing live TV

Post by btb82 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:24 am

This may be of interest to some users.

I only watch live TV or recordings direct from the Argus TV Scheduler Console, I don't make use of any other software, for me its just unnecessary bloat. Until recently VLC player was the only player that could render the stream properly from Argus, but now we can use MPC-HC, with a little bit of trickery.

MPC-HC is a very good media player, highly configurable, for more details about this have a read here http://www.ezoden.com/684/tutorial-htpc and be impressed by its capabilities.

To use MPC-HC with Argus we first need to install VLC player to its default location which will be something like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC then delete the contents of the VLC folder.

Now install MPC-HC (download links from http://www.ezoden.com/684/tutorial-htpc), to something like C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC and copy the contents of the installation folder and paste them into the empty VLC folder, and rename mpc-hc.exe to vlc.exe.

Now when you uses the Argus TV Scheduler to watch live TV it will be using MPC-HC, and if you follow the tutorial linked to earlier you can configure this with the high quality madVR renderer, LAV or ffdshow codecs, reclock etc, and with a minimal installation still achieve the highest quality playback.

It won't be everyone's choice of how to watch live or recorded TV, though nice to have options.

Good tip.

It would be nicer if there was an option to pick the player/location of your choice though instead of VLC, VLC or VLC :P
