General Remark

The error messages "No card found to record program", "No Free Card Found To Start Live Stream", "No tuner was able to start the live stream" come from various situations, like trying to stream Live TV from Scheduler or Front-End, or scheduling a Recording - only some of the occurrences. The cause of it may be manifold and in addition, even multiple. And even different, whether you're using MediaPortal TV Server or ARGUS TV Recorder. With this article, we collect potential hurdles. Please feel free to drop us a message, if you encounter additional, non-covered issues.

Symptoms

  • When a recorded schedule should start to record, you get a "No card found to record program" in the log or see this message in the Notifier on Mouseover.
  • When trying to tune a channel you get the error "No free card was found to start the live stream"
  • The channel you are trying to tune may be greyed out (or may be not) in the ARGUS TV Scheduler Console Live TV page. This information may be crucial, it gives you a hint, what to take a closer look at.

Categories of potential causes

In this article we differ three categories of potential causes:

  1. Card / driver failure
  2. Access rights of your recordings and/or timeshift folders or shares
  3. Bad channel scan / definition / linkage

The categories are ordered like layers "bottom - up", from driver and/or hardware issues over your Windows configuration to ARGUS TV configuration. Please keep in mind: if the layer below doesn't work, you won't succeed with the one above.

Where should I start to search?

To minimize the amount of work (and time), please run the basic following checks, that may give you a hint, where your search should start... maybe. Don't forget the other categories if that doesn't solve your issues.

  1. Stop the MediaPortal TV Server or ARGUS TV Recorder service & run the software coming with your card.
If it works and you receive a Live TV picture → try below next check
If this isn't working → start with category No. 1
  2. (Don't forget to restart the stopped services again during check #1)
  3. If the channels under ARGUS TV Scheduler Console section "Live TV" are NOT greyed out → start with category No. 2
  4. If the channels under ARGUS TV Scheduler Console section "Live TV" are greyed out → start with category No. 3

If you're not sure, we recommend to ensure proper setup "bottom - up" & to start at the beginning - category No. 1.

Please run the following troubleshooting steps at the beginning for one or two channels only, until you succeed - and apply this only then to all channels, this will overall save you time. Otherwise it might be that you're performing steps that are technically not solving your issue.

When tackling Live TV issues - especially with Linux-based front-ends like OpenELEC, Android- or MAC-front-ends - very often, the second category is the one for you to have a closer look at. Additionally we have a paragraph which may help you in these cases, even if you're not using Kodi or OpenELEC: ICN WIKI INLINE.PNG Kodi with PVS Support → Troubleshooting & Restrictions

Card / driver failure

ICN INFO.PNG Information:
In this error category, the channels under ARGUS TV Scheduler Console section "Live TV" are usually greyed out. This may give you a hint to read this paragraph carefully

Access rights of your recordings and/or timeshift folders or shares

ICN INFO.PNG Information:
In this error category, the channels under ARGUS TV Scheduler Console section "Live TV" are usually NOT greyed out. This may give you a hint to read this paragraph carefully
  • Access rights to folders & shares
  • Running Linux-based front-ends: carefully look at capitalization of servers, shares and folders
  • Wrong startup timings
  • Service run with misfitting credentials:

Solution: edit the user that starts the service you have to go to: Controlpanel, Administrative tools, Services...Find Argustv and other related services and select properties. Then click the "Log on" tab. Instead of "local service", tick "This account" and edit it to a administrative user and password.

Im sure this is a bug of some sort that can be solved via other methods, but i've tried edit rights on shares and so on, and still havent found a solution that works properly. I think my system stopped working after doing a upgrade of the argustv version. Somehow the rights to access things using local services got screwed up. Im happy with argustv having admin rights, i trust it to handle it with care

Bad channel scan / definition / linkage

ICN INFO.PNG Information:
In this error category, the channels under ARGUS TV Scheduler Console section "Live TV" are usually greyed out. This may give you a hint to read this paragraph carefully

      • unsorted and old content related to MediaPortal only

The channel you are trying to watch may not have been linked to any services in the ARGUS TV Recorder Console. All of your cards are busy tuning other frequencies. Your cards have reached their CAM limit.

Possible Solutions

Link Channels to services in the ARGUS TV Recorder Console Channels page. Make a card available by stopping a stream or recording. Check the CAM Limit of your cards. Add additional tuner cards to your system.
